Facing
the Eye

Ausgehend vom Imperativ der Sichtbarkeit fragt die Ausstellung Facing the Eye nach Möglichkeiten eines subversiven Umgangs mit Bildern und Bildhaftigkeit. Der Sichtbarkeitsdruck zeigt sich beispielsweise in der Kopftuchdebatte, der Beliebtheit von Facebook oder auch im Vermummungsverbot. Wie kann ihm begegnet werden? Hat selbst gewählte Unsichtbarkeit nicht auch etwas Befreiendes? Die Ausstellungsbeiträge eröffnen einen Raum zwischen Sehen und Gesehen­Werden, Zeigen und Verbergen. Pose, Maskerade und Schleier erscheinen im abstrakten Sinne als Formen, die die Kraft haben unsere visuellen Vorannahmen zu vergegenwärtigen. Im besten Falle blitzen Taktiken der Widerständigkeit in und mit Bildern auf.

Und auch Stefan Hurtigs Entscheidung zum Diplom in einer Doppelrolle aufzutreten gehört zum Programm. Auf der einen Seite stellt er retrospektiv eigene Arbeiten aus, auf der anderen lädt er weitere KünstlerInnen in den D21 Kunstraum ein. Seine Künstlerpersönlichkeit rückt damit aus dem Zentrum heraus. Über die kuratorische Praxis und die Gestaltung des Displays gelangt in Facing the Eye der Sehprozess selbst und die damit verbundene Macht der Festschreibung von Identitäten in den Mittelpunkt des Blicks.

Facing the Eye - Diploma Show

Taking the imperative of visibility as a starting point the exhibition Facing the Eye investigates possibilities of a subversive handling of images and visuality. With the debate on head scarfs in France, the German law against mummery or the popularity of Facebook.com the pressure to be visible becomes evident. How can this be faced? Why not consider a self chosen invisibility as something liberating? The exhibited works create a space between seeing and being-seen, showing and hiding. In an abstract sense posing, masquerading and veiling are forms that have the power of bringing to mind our presupposition concerning visuality. Ideally, these can be rec- ognized as tactics of resistance within visual culture instead of mere opposi- tion to image production.

Stefan Hurtig‘s decision to appear in a double role is part of the exhibition concept. On the one hand the show as the major part of the diploma retro- spectively gathers some of his own work. On the other hand he invites fur- ther contemporary artists to participate in the exhibition at D21 Art Space. Rather than creating a focus on singular artist positions Facing the Eye by means of curatorial setting and display design emphasizes the process of seeing itself and the related power of determining identities.
